Cookie Policy
Effective date: 8 October 2026 (2026-10-08) · Last updated: 8 October 2026
This policy explains how swipelynews.com (the "Website") uses cookies and similar technologies, such as local storage and tracking scripts. It's a supplement to our Privacy Policy, which also explains how the SwipelyNews App handles data. (The App doesn't use cookies for its own features; see Privacy Policy section 14.)
What cookies are
Cookies are small text files that a website stores in your browser. Similar technologies, like local storage, work in a comparable way. Some are strictly necessary for a website to work. Others, like analytics, are optional, and we only use them with your consent.
Your choices
- First visit. Our cookie banner (Cookiebot by Usercentrics) lets you Accept all, Reject all, or choose by category. "Reject all" is as easy as "Accept all", and nothing optional is switched on before you choose.
- Change your mind at any time via Cookie settings in the footer of every page. Withdrawing consent is as easy as giving it.
- Global Privacy Control (GPC). If your browser sends a GPC signal, we treat it as a refusal of optional cookies and as an opt-out of sale/sharing. Statistics stay off unless you switch them on yourself.
- We ask again at least every 12 months, and whenever we add a new category.
- Nothing before consent. The Website sets no non-essential cookies, and loads no analytics, before you choose.
- Your browser settings also let you block or delete cookies. Blocking strictly necessary cookies may break parts of the Website.
Categories we use
| Category | Purpose | Legal basis | Examples (see the full list below) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Strictly necessary | Security and bot protection (including on our contact form), load balancing, remembering your cookie choices and your language | Strictly necessary for the service you request (ePrivacy rules; no consent needed) | Cookiebot consent cookie (CookieConsent, 12 months); Cloudflare Turnstile on the contact form (loaded only on /contact, in a challenges.cloudflare.com frame; no cookies on swipelynews.com, but it may use storage inside its own frame); Cloudflare bot-protection cookie __cf_bm (30 minutes), only if bot protection is enabled on the Website |
| Statistics | Understanding how many people visit, and which pages are useful, so we can improve the Website | Your consent (ePrivacy rules; Art. 6(1)(a) GDPR) | Google Analytics 4 via Firebase (_ga, _ga_<ID>, 426 days ≈ 14 months); Firebase browser storage (IndexedDB firebase-installations-database, firebase-heartbeat-database), created only after consent |
| Marketing | Not used. We don't use advertising or social-media tracking cookies on the Website. |
How we configure Google Analytics:
- We use Google Consent Mode v2 in "basic" mode: the Analytics script doesn't load at all until you consent.
- The advertising signals (
ad_storage,ad_user_data,ad_personalization) are always denied. - Google signals, ads linking and Google's data-sharing settings are off, so Google processes the data for us as a processor.
- Data is kept for 14 months.
- Google may process data in the USA under the EU-US Data Privacy Framework and Standard Contractual Clauses. See the Privacy Policy.
Embedded content. We don't embed third-party videos or social-media posts. If we ever do, they load only after you consent, or after you click to load them.
Shared story pages (/r/…) use the same cookies as the rest of the Website.

Your consent record
Cookiebot keeps a record of your choice (a random consent ID, the date and time, your choice, the browser user agent, and an anonymised IP address) to prove consent, for 12 months. Your consent ID is shown in Cookie settings, and you can quote it if you contact us.
